After getting up at 5am for our flight, bus, then ferry we finally after 12.5 hours arrived on this party island called Ko Phangan.
Ko Phangan is an island in the Gulf of Thailand in South East Thailand, and located in Surat Thani Province. Some time ago, a group of tourists found that the most beautiful moon was in Ko Phangan. They arranged a party along the crescent shaped beach of Haad Rin to celebrate the full moon night. From then on people from all over the world have come to join this celebration. And this is what the island of Ko Phangan is famous for.
I’m staying at resort called Becks resort. Its not like the luxury i enjoyed on my first trip to Thailand about 2.5 years ago but its definitely more luxury than what i will be living in going forward. The room is very simple, bed, fan and very simple bathroom but who comes to Thailand to sit in your room!!! The actual resort is really lovely, the bar and deck are right on the beach, so all day every day you are overlooking the ocean and the water is at your feet and then in the evenings you have the most stunning sunset views!!!! The restaurant serves amazing food and the best part is the staff are so friendly!!! Also as most of the people are backpackers everyone is always chatting and finding out where you are next heading and if they are going the same route. I’ve already met some really lovely people and this is only my first week!!
The resort is about a 10 min walk into the main town of Thong Sala. This island really is in the middle of no where and had it not been that im doing my diving course at an island which is an hour ferry ride away then i would not have come here. Not that it isnt beautiful as all the islands are, but this island is where you come if you want to do some serious partying and thats just not what i want. There is a night food market in the evenings…i’m not gonna lie some of the food is very questionable….dont get me wrong im going to try some Thail delicacies but some things look (and the smell isn’t that great either) like a dog wouldnt even eat it!!!!
Ive spent the last few days with my two friends, Angie and Bron and we have had some great times. Our second night here (the 30th Dec) we decided we wanted to go to a pool party on the island. Well the tuk tuk driver (taxi driver for those of you who do not know) ended up taking us out in the middle of no where to some massive boat party. Not complaining as it was an awesome party and we met so many south africans. Amazing how you can just spot the saffas. After a bit of a party there we decided to attempt to get to this pool party again….nope we were not destined to get there…this time tuk tuk driver took us to a jungle party which really was in the jungle. I dont think i have ever in my 30 years of life ever experienced anything so insane but also totally fun and amazing!!!!!! Just to show you how cheap a night out is and why all youngsters seem to go crazy here…i took out 1,000 thb and that got me transport there and back in a Tuk tuk, entrance into the party, a shirt for the night, food and my drinks all night….That works out to 20 pounds / R282 ….crazy cheap!!!
Now for the NYE party the following day… we headed to the full moon party in our neon face paint (neon colours are traditional for the full moon parties) and on arrival on Haad Rin beach i bought a shirt that said “full moon party ko phangan”…don’t know when I’ll ever wear it again but its got to be done 😉 The full moon party was crazy!!!! There were about 80,000 people all partying on this little curve of a beach. Beach bars selling the famous Thai buckets (basically your choice of poison…Sang Son rum, Mekhong whiskey, vodka or gin combined with coke or sprite, ice and some Thai red bull), different music pumping from every bar, people dancing all over the beach…all wearing neon colours…then at midnight the most beautiful display of fireworks!!!!! We had gone to the party in a big group but in that size of a party its pretty much impossible to not lose each other… which is what happened. But Angie, myself and another girl Rose managed to stay together most of the time. We left that party at 7am!!!! Wow! Amazing but def a one off party for me!!
I ate something from the street vendor on the way home from the full moon party and whatever i ate seemed to not agree with me. All day on the 1st i was sick in bed, throwing up even with the smallest sip of water. It definitely wwasnt a hangover as i know what those feel like haha. But glad to report i’m all recovered. But let me tell you i was very tempted to book myself into a posh hotel for the day… something about having an air con and tv in the room when you are sick just makes recovering easier. Being sick in 35 degrees heat, in a fan room is not fun!!!!
Right onto a not so pleasant topic…as some of you have seen on the news and contacted me all worried about this i thought i should just address it…. there was a 22 year old British tourist shot on new years on the beach i was on. He was caught in a cross fire between 2 gangs and was shot in the chest while dancing on the beach at 4am. Thailand is prob one of the safest places you can be, this was just a “in the wrong place at the wrong time” situation, it could have happened anywhere. I am ok and feel totally safe so please don’t worry about me.
So basically my days in Ko Phangan have consisted of me getting out of bed around 11am, heading to breakfast, then tanning on the deck on my doorstep, swimming in the sea…this is all until around 6pm. Then either its chilling at our hotel bar in the evenings (music is played until about 4am) or heading out into town. So this first week has really been a proper holiday. Tough life i’m leading haha
Yesterday was my last day in Ko Phangan so i just took one last stroll around town, went for a massage which was the best massage i have ever had. I suffer with really bad knots under my shoulder blades and this thai women was determined to get them all out and for a bargain of just 7 pounds….that’s def going to be my weekly treat, especially with carrying a backpack around I’m sure I’m going to need it
Now its time to head over to Koh Tao which is where i will be doing my diving. I really should not have looked at booking a speed boat to the island at the last miute but i foolishly did and instead of getting there early i will only arrive at 3:30pm and my first day at dive school is supposed to start at 4pm. Eeeek!!!!
Angie and Bron left early this am so going forward i’m a solo traveller!!!!!!
